If you have a ribbon microphone in your audio tool box, then you should have a Mogaine “pre” preamp next to it. Ribbon mics are great, but you’ve probably already found out they have a pretty low output compared to condenser or even dynamic mics. On a quiet source even with the trim set at “10", you could use some more gain.

Why Choose Mogaine?
Mogaine has a trasformer on the input, compared to some major competitors which are all-solid-state. This is important because a transformer generates noiseless gain where the signal is smallest. The Equivalent Input Noise (EIN) value for Mogaine is 10 dB less than the major competitor!

In addition to a quieter design, the output impedance of the Mogaine is less than 140 ohms. Some competitors have an output impedance of about 11,000 ohms. That's a big deal because microphone input channels typically have input impedances around 1500 ohms. If you do the math, you'll see that competitors are about 7 times HIGHER, while the Mogaine is about 10 times LOWER. In practice, this means Mogaine often delivers about 6 to 9 dB more gain than other options, depending on the mic channel.

In one sentence, The Mogaine is louder and quieter, at the same time.

In less than one sentence:
The CL-1 is all solid state while the Mogaine has a transformer on the input. That's important because a transformer generates noiseless gain where the signal is smallest. It shows up in the fact that Mogaine's Equivalent Input Noise (EIN) value is 10 dB less than the CL. Also, the Mogaine output stage is different. The output impedance of the CL is about 11,000 ohms - where the Mogaine is less than 140 ohms. That's a big deal because both of these devices are designed to feed microphone input channels, with typical input impedances around 1500 ohms. If you do the math, you'll see CL is about 7 times HIGHER, while Mogaine is about 10 times LOWER. Because of that, in actual use, CL won't give 25 dB of gain unless the mic channel has an input impedance of at least 7000 ohms, which very very rare. Mogaine delivers 25 dB of gain in the real world - about 6 to 9dB more than CL, depending on the mic channel.

The Mogaine preamp is a phantom powered, fixed gain pre amp that delivers 25dB of low distortion, wide bandwidth, ultra quiet gain. It combines the noiseless gain of an input transformer with the impedance matching and drive capability of active circuitry. It allows you to dial back the gain on your mixer/pre amp to it’s happy place, and still capture every delicate nuance. The 3.3kΩ input impedance lets you hear intricacies you’ve been missing. Plug your favorite dynamic mic into it, and get that smooth dynamic mic sound with the sensitivity of a condenser mic.

There are other “pre” preamps, but they don’t deliver the “real world” gain of a Mogaine. They also have about 10 dB more noise, making the Mogaine both louder and quieter at the same time. And, with a Mogaine, your mic is plugged directly into a phantom blocking transformer for an extra layer of protection. Mogaine is also available in a 2 channel version - Mogaines - for stereo pair applications.
