A speakon connector is another variation of speaker cable connector. How is it different than a 1/4 speaker connector? Speakon adaptors lock to the speaker. They aren't going to just come out if someone trips on your speaker cable. Also, they are normally able to handle a higher current than a 1/4 connector, the conductors are covered so there is less likelihood of getting shocked, they have less shorting issues, and they self wipe so corrosion buildup can be less of a problem. In addition to this, they are super easy to identify and will not be mistaken for a guitar/instrument cable like a 1/4 in speaker cable can.
