Koa Wood

Koa is a species of Acacia endemic to the Hawaiian islands. It can be found growing on Hawai'i, Maui, and O'ahu islands. The majority of Koa used for instruments is responsibly harvested from Hawai'i island, also known as the Big Island, from naturally fallen Koa trees. 

Koa wood is known for its deep rich colors and varied grain patterns. Older trees will feature more figured wood, known as curly figured koa. The more curl the wood has, the more expensive it is. 

Koa is loved by instrument makers, not only because of its beauty but also its unique sound. Koa has a smooth sound with a strong, focused low-end with a splash of a high-end chime.
